Firestone Indy Lights
The current Indy lights Series was founded in 2002 by the Indy Racing League (IRL) as its official feeder category. Previously known as the Indy Pro Series, it officially became Firestone Indy Lights at the start of 2008.
Recent champions have included three Britons: Mark Taylor (2003), Jay Howard (2006) and Alex Lloyd (2007). The 2009 title was won by American driver JR Hildebrand.
The spec car used is a Dallara chassis with a 3.5-litre V8 engine producing 420bhp.
Indy Lights runs on a mixture of ovals, temporary street and airport circuits and permanent road courses. In 2010 there are 13 races on the calendar, the centrepiece of being the Firestone Freedom 100, which takes place on the Friday before the Indianapolis 500.
