2010 Firestone Indy Lights

Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama, 11 April

Stefan finished sixth at the scenic Alabama track to maintain his third place in the Firestone Indy Lights standings.

The 45-minute qualifying session on Saturday was interrupted three times by full course yellows, and Stefan was left disappointed with his final lap time. All the same, it was good enough to earn him sixth place in the starting lineup.

On Sunday the weather was warm and sunny, in sharp contrast to wet and windy St Petersburg two weeks before. A large and appreciative crowd watched the race get under way, though almost immediately the double yellow flags were waved when Carmen Jordan spun off the track.

Following the restart, with Stefan running comfortably in sixth place, the frontrunners of the 17-strong field pulled out a gap on the rest. As the top six became increasingly spread out there were no opportunities to try to overtake, though fierce battles raged further back as cars passed and re-passed. Newcomer Dan Clarke - a former Champ Car World Series driver and another Yorkshireman - then broke free of the pack and came chasing after Stefan. Another full course yellow allowed him to close right up, but Stefan gave him no chance to overtake at the restart and gradually increased the gap between them.

Stefan crossed the finish line sixth behind the winner JK Vernay. Charlie Kimball was second and Stefan's team-mate Sebastián Saavedra completed the podium lineup.

Stefan's verdict on the race: "The car was handling really well. The race was kind of dictated from where you started after qualifying. I made a clean start, kept my position, and from there on it was very processional because it was very hard to overtake. I felt sixth today was a good haul of points. We're still third in the points leaving here so that's pretty good."
