2008 British Formula 3
Rounds 15 and 16
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
1-2 August
The legendary circuit at Spa-Francorchamps is one that most drivers really look forward to racing on, and Stefan was no exception. His verdict afterwards: "It's an amazing track! I can't wait to go back there."
Unfortunately, his Spa debut was delayed by an engine problem that kept him out of the first practice session, so he had to learn the long track (just over 7km) in second practice. He qualified fourth for the first race, nearly 0.8s off team-mate Jay Bridger's pole time, but closed the gap to just 0.158s in second qualifying, setting the third fastest time.
Starting fourth for race one, Stefan was soon on the move, taking advantage of other drivers' mishaps at Les Combes to drop down a gear and go round the outside of Steven Guerrero to take third place. A couple of laps later he caught Bridger, who had been beaten off the grid by Salman Al Khalifa. The team-mates ran wheel to wheel into the fearsome Eau Rouge, but then Bridger ran a little wide, allowing Stefan to pass him round the outside into Les Combes. From there Stefan chased down Al Khalifa, passing him on lap seven again into Les Combes, though this time down the inside. He then held on to the lead all the way to the chequered flag to score his second National Class win of the season.
When the lights went out for race two, a stalled car at the front of the grid forced those behind to take avoiding action and Stefan lost some time. But from there on he strung some fast laps together in a bid to catch the leading pair, Bridger and Guerrero. Racing right on the latter's gearbox, though, he was dismayed to find his car's pace falling away. Gradually dropping back, he lost third place to Al Khalifa on the penultimate lap and was passed near the end by Hywel Lloyd to finish the race in fifth place. When he returned to the pits, it was discovered that the rear brake duct had broken, got lodged between the driveshaft and the rear suspension and had acted like a parachute, creating a huge amount of extra drag.
It was a disappointing end to what had otherwise been a successful debut at Spa, where the team had made progress with the car set-up. "We had good pace all weekend," Stefan said afterwards, "and I really enjoyed it, except for what happened in race two."
Stefan will be hoping for more steps forward in the next F3 event at Silverstone.
