Rounds 7 and 8
Rockingham, 26 May
After the wet weekend at Monza, the F3 teams came to Rockingham hoping for better weather - but it was a bank holiday so of course the weather was terrible! Heavy rain on Sunday turned qualifying turned into a lottery once more, with both sessions punctuated by red flags and huge pools of water turning the final chicane into a watersplash. Stefan came through it all to qualify sixth for race one and fourth for race two.
On Monday morning there was a strong and cold wind blowing, but it looked as if the rain would hold off until the first F3 race was over. Unfortunately, though, the start was delayed so a few spots were beginning to fall as the cars lined up on the grid. Stefan made a good getaway and went for a move down the inside of a car ahead, but in the jostling for position he got squeezed out and by the time the field turned off the banking into the infield section of the course, he was right at the back.
From there, the only way was forward and Stefan made good progress, picking off the opposition one by one at regular intervals. A couple of National Class cars retired along the way and with just a few laps to go Stefan was running fourth. His next target was his team-mate Jay Bridger, who was several seconds ahead with the International Class car of Philip Major between them. By now the track was getting damp and, at the infield hairpin, Bridger spun. Major slowed to avoid him and Stefan took advantage to slip past both cars. Bridger recovered but Stefan was able to stay ahead and he came home to claim third place and join Andy Meyrick (winner) and Salman Al Khalifa (second) on the podium. Stefan was pleased with the result - even more than with his second place at Monza, because he'd earned this one through his own efforts.
By the time the grid formed for race two, the circuit was thoroughly soaked and it was rain tyres all round. Like everyone else, Stefan had to work hard to stay on the track, but he still managed some overtaking, including passing a couple of International Class backmarkers. Again he came up behind his team-mate and he tried hard to get by, but this time it was Stefan's turn to fall victim to the conditions. At the corner where Bridger had spun earlier, Stefan ran wide through the gravel trap and then over some long grass, taking large tufts of it with him as he got back on to the track. His excursion left him in last place but one and, although he tried hard to make up ground, he was still several lengths behind the next car by the time the chequered flag came out. With two cars having retired, he finished sixth. That together with his race one result lifted him to fourth in the National Class standings.
