2007 Formula Palmer Audi
Rounds 1, 2
Silverstone National Circuit
7 April
The 2007 Visma Formula Palmer Audi championship got under way at Silverstone on 7 April with two rounds on the 1.64-mile National circuit. Stefan made a good start by recording the fourth fastest time in pre-event testing, and then launched his championship challenge by qualifying third for race one and fourth for race two. Pole position for both rounds went to Matt Hamilton, with Luciano Bacheta second. Jack Clarke qualified fourth and third respectively.
In Round 1, Bacheta snatched the lead from Hamilton off the starting grid, while Stefan got boxed in and lost places at Copse, the first corner. A spinning car then delayed him further and he dropped to 10th. The safety car came out early on following a series of collisions and Hamilton soon regained the lead, which he held to the chequered flag. Meanwhile, Stefan, despite finding his car becoming tail-happy towards the end of the race, managed to fight his way back up to 7th out of the 22 starters.
Round 2 got off to a bad start when polesitter Hamilton's car stalled on the grid and was hit by several other cars. Hamilton was airlifted to hospital with a broken leg. At the restart, Stefan lost two places but, with the car now much more to his liking after a change of set-up, recovered to pass Jolyon Palmer and Alex Brundle to take third place. That became second when race leader Jack Clarke spun. Stefan then resisted pressure from Jason Moore (who had also passed Palmer and Brundle) and came home second for his maiden podium finish. He also set the race's fastest lap.
After two rounds of the championship Stefan was third in the standings.
