Rounds 16, 17
Donington National Circuit
1-2 September
Free practice at Donington began on a damp track, with all three championship challengers recording quick times. But while leader Tim Bridgman set the fastest lap, Stefan was unable to complete the session after an accident that damaged his car. Fortunately, it was repaired in time for the second session, which saw Stefan and rival Luciano Bacheta finish fifth and fourth respectively but with identical times.
In qualifying for the first race Bridgman took pole position and Bacheta was second, with Stefan back in sixth. In the second session, though, it was Stefan who topped the timesheets, having found a good set-up after trying different solutions through the day. Bridgman qualified fourth and Bacheta fifth.
In Round 16 Bridgman was in a class of his own, leading all the way to the chequered flag with only Matt Hamilton putting in any kind of challenge. Third-placed Jack Clarke spent much of the race fending off a train of cars that included Stefan, who made up two places and then attacked Clarke. The two went side by side several times, but it was Clarke who claimed the third podium place. Bacheta, meanwhile, made an early mistake that cost him a number of places and he could only finish eighth.
In Round 17 it was Stefan's turn to lead the race almost unchallenged as Alex Brundle, who started alongside on the front row, crashed out on the second lap. Stefan's three-second lead only came under threat - from Bridgman - towards the end of the race when he was having a problem finding third gear. Stefan's win completed a remarkable double for the Wilson family as earlier that afternoon brother Justin scored his first win of the Champ Car World Series season at Assen in the Netherlands.
Bridgman's results extended his lead over Stefan to 48 points, but with three more rounds - and a potential 72 points - to come at Croft the championship battle was by no means over.
