2007 Formula Palmer Audi

Rounds 18, 19, 20
Croft
21-23 September

The battle for the championship was still on as Formula Palmer Audi headed to Croft in North Yorkshire for the season finale. Title favourite Tim Bridgman was 48 points ahead, but with 72 points available over the three rounds, Stefan was still in with a chance - though at the same time he had to defend his second place against Luciano Bacheta, who was only 19 points behind.

The weather played havoc with the four Friday practice sessions, with heavy rain and standing water causing accidents and delays. Stefan began well but slipped to ninth fastest as the track began to dry out towards the end.

On Saturday the track was slightly damp to start with and then dried up. In qualifying for the first two races Stefan could only manage seventh and ninth places respectively. Bacheta took pole for both rounds, with Bridgman second and third in the two sessions.

In the first race, Round 18, Stefan made a bad start and dropped to ninth, but he soon began to fight his way back, using his boost button to pull off a fine series of overtaking moves into the final hairpin. He crossed the line in third place behind Bacheta and Matt Hamilton, having set not only the fastest lap of the race but a new lap record for the circuit. Bridgman finished fourth, so would have to wait until Sunday to try to score the three points he needed for the title.

Round 19 was a similar story for Stefan. Starting ninth, he again put on an impressive display of overtaking and came home fourth, though there was no fastest lap this time. Victory went to Jack Clarke, with Bacheta finishing second, but the focus was on Bridgman, whose third place won him the championship.

Stefan's record-breaking lap earned him pole position for Round 20, the final race of the championship. Tom Bradshaw lined up beside him on the front row, while Bacheta - now only nine points behind Stefan - was sixth on the grid. The early part of the race was full of incident as Bridgman and Clarke had to retire after an incident with Hamilton, and Bacheta crashed out at the chicane. Bradshaw passed Stefan to take the lead and went on to record his first win in the series. Stefan held off a challenge from Jason Moore and came home second.

Stefan thus took second place in the 2007 Formula Palmer Audi championship in his first full season of car racing.
