Rounds 3, 4, 5
Brands Hatch GP Circuit
27-29 April
Stefan's previous visit to Brands Hatch was for last year's Autumn Trophy meeting, held on the short Indy circuit. This time he would be tackling the full Grand Prix circuit, one of the most challenging in the country. In qualifying for the first of the three races he was ninth fastest, though his lap time was less than half a second off that of polesitter Jolyon Palmer. In qualifying for race two he improved his time by just over a second and that put him on the front row of the grid alongside Tim Bridgman.
Starting from ninth place in the first race - Round 3 of the championship - gave Stefan a chance to demonstrate his overtaking skills, which he did by charging through the field to fifth. The race was won by Bridgman, who took advantage of Palmer's slow start to take the lead and then held it to the chequered flag.
Stefan started Round 4 from second on the grid and spent most of the race in relentless pursuit of polesitter Bridgman. An attempt at overtaking into Paddock Hill Bend didn't come off, but with four laps to go Stefan made another move and passed Bridgman down Pilgrim's Drop. He then fended off Bridgman all the way to the chequered flag to take his maiden victory. He also set the race's fastest lap. "It's an incredible feeling to win for the first time," said Stefan afterwards. "It means a lot to me, especially as I didn't win a race in karting last year, and I've got to thank my dad Keith for being so supportive!"
The grid for Round 5 was decided by the drivers' fastest laps from the first two races, and this meant Stefan lined up fourth. Bridgman was again alongside, while the front row was occupied by Palmer and Luciano Bacheta. Stefan made a reasonable start but some handling problems led to him losing two places on the first lap. He then fought back to fourth and was again closing in on Bridgman when the chequered flag was waved. Bacheta won the race after getting the jump on Palmer at the start.
At the end of the weekend Stefan was lying second in the championship.
